Where is Baghdad Located?

Baghdad is today the capital of Iraq and is located approximately in the center of the country. The city is located directly on the Tigris about 30 m above sea level.

What Country is Baghdad in?

Baghdad was founded in 762 ad by the Abbasid Caliph Mansur as the new capital. He called it the city of peace [madinat-ul-salam]. It was built just a few kilometers east of the ancient capital of the Sassanid Empire of Ktesiphon. Within four years, the Caliph’s Palace and the main mosque were built on the Western Bank of the Tigris.

Due to the conveniently chosen location at the junction of numerous trade routes and the fertile cultivation areas near the Tigris (Didschla), the newly founded City prospered quickly. When Mansur’s son Al-Mahdi ibn Masur ascended the throne, Baghdad already had an area of about 15 square kilometers. According to an Arab historian, Baghdad had 65,000 public baths at the time of the later caliph Mamun. It was the centre of Sciences and arts in the heyday of Baghdad.
