Where is Asyut Located?

The central Egyptian city of asylum is located on the Western Nile bank 375 kilometers south of Cairo and 100 kilometers north of Sohag. The district capital, which has a population of around 400,000, has been located at a strategically important transport hub in Egypt since ancient times, because the Nile Valley at Asylum is no more than 20 kilometers wide. Asylum has been settled since the Fourth Dynasty.

In the 1990s, the city became politically visible to the public, when Jemaa al Islamiya acted, rebel against the state system in Egypt. Asyut has several points of interest. Those arriving by Bus or train can first visit the lively El-Qasriya bazaar of the medieval Old Town, which is located southwest of the railway stations. The 300-year-old Wikala Shalabi is the most important one, because its two floors have been completely renovated and show the tradition of caravan trade alive. In the same street is the mosque and Koran school of Galal ad-Din al-Asyuti with adjoining Hammam. To the west of the bazaar, the Ottoman el Mujahideen mosque opens its doors to visitors. Adjacent is the Tomb of Sheikh Umar. The municipal El Magdub cemetery with Graves from the time of Ramses II is also worth a visit. The old town of asylum is constantly being redeveloped.
