Where is Ashkelon Located?

The city of Ashkelon (Arabic: ʿAsqalān, Latin: Ascalon) is located in the southwest area of the state of Israel and has since the last census in 2011, approximately 117.000 inhabitants. It is located north of Gaza City on the south-eastern Mediterranean coast. The center of today’s Ashkelon is the district of Afridar. The town has an extensive sandy beach. On the southern edge of the town there is an archaeological Park with the ruins of the ancient settlements. Ashkelon was an important trading city from the Middle Bronze Age to the Middle Ages and an important fortified place on the roads between Egypt and Palestine.

But there are also older finds in Ashkelon, for example from the Stone Age. After the Crusades, the place sank into insignificance. The Arab village of Al-Majdal was already mentioned by historians and visitors towards the end of the 15th century. The settlement, now under the rule of the Ottomans – in the year 1596 in the records as a large village of 559 Muslim households. Since 1948 there was a reception camp for Jewish new immigrants in Ashkelon. In 1955, the former Arab village of Al-Majdal was incorporated. On the southern edge of the town there is an archaeological Park with the ruins of the ancient settlements. In 1985, Lawrence Stager of Harvard University began archaeological excavations in ancient Ashkelon.
