As-Salt, the capital of the Balqa governorate, built on Three Hills, is only half an hour’s drive from Amman. In the 19th century, during Ottoman rule, it was the center of lucrative trade between the Region and the main cities of Palestine, benefiting from its location on the Syrian pilgrimage route to Mecca. Developed with the settlement of traders from Nablus, Syria, and Egypt, As-Salt between 1865 and 1925 from a rural settlement to a prosperous city. This new layer of businessmen consolidated a thriving and tolerant society in which the various religions were respected and invested in businesses and representative housing. Among the stonemasons and architects who helped build the new city, Abdel Rahman al Aqrouq from Nablus (1851-1944) became the leading figure of a group of builders, stonemasons and craftsmen who followed his charismatic character and original ideas. With their technical skills and individual taste, they created the independent architecture of As-Salt, in which they integrated European references and Oriental traditions.
