Where is Amrit (Syria) Located?

About eight kilometers South of the city of Tartus, the ruins of the ancient city of Amrit are. On an area of about 7.5 km2, one finds today the remains of numerous buildings, which testify to the importance of Amrit’s entry.

First traces of settlement go back to the third Millennium BC.. However, the city was founded only around 1600 BC by the Amurrites. During the time of Alexander the great, the city received the Greek name of Marathos. Exactly when it was destroyed is unclear today, but can probably be limited to the century before the Christian era. From 1860 onwards, regular excavations took place on site, which revealed numerous important finds, some of which are now on display in the Louvre.
