Where is Ambalangoda Located?
Ambalangoda is mainly known for the Sinhalese mask carving art. In a variety of workshops, the various masks are carved to this day, which are then used in dance performances or in the expulsion of demons throughout the country. Colorful and in motifs that have been handed down for centuries, the masks are worked out of the wood – a real art.

The Wijesooriya mask carver family, also from Ambalangoda, has made a special name for itself. In the House of Ariyapala Gurunanse, the grandson of Wijesooriya, there is a small but interesting Museum where you can learn a lot about the art of mask carving, its history and its meaning. Even a brochure in German is available here. In addition to the Museum, there is a family workshop and a small shop where you can buy various masks.
