Where is Almaty Located?

Alma-Ata (or Almaty) is one of the largest cities of Kazakhstan, which for a long time was the capital of the Kazakh Republic in the Soviet Union. Almaty lost its capital Status in 1997, when the president of the country decided to make the city of Astana the capital of Kazakhstan. The name of the town was Alma Ata only from 1921 to 1993 – since 1993 the official name is Almaty, the name that the town already bore before.

What Country is Almaty in?

After Astana, Alexeyevka and Borovoye there is one last destination on our Kazakhstan trip: Almaty, the old and still secret capital at the foot of the northern Tien Shan mountains. As a child I have unfortunately never been here. No wonder, Almaty is about 1300 kilometers from my old hometown.

But since we absolutely want to see the Tien Shan mountains, there is no question that we have to go to Almaty. Since you need more than 12 hours for the route even with the fastest train, we decide to fly from Astana, especially since the flights are also very cheap. And even the approach to Almaty is impressive. Because directly behind the city rises the mighty backdrop of the mountain giants, which are up to more than 4,000 meters high.
