Where is Africa Located?
Africa is considered the cradle of humanity, where the oldest traces of primitive human species and Homo sapiens have been found. Africa also revealed the world’s first high culture. At the Egyptians in North Africa, Agriculture was developed and carried out into the world.
Despite the separation of Afrka from Europe through the Mediterranean, African history was often closely associated with European history. Carthage was a dominant great power in North Africa in the 1st millennium BC. But in Punic Wars she was defeated by the Romans. From 30 BC onwards, they ruled the whole of North Africa.
In the migration period, the vandals conquered Roman North Africa. With the victory of Islam, Egypt was conquered in 641 and Morocco in 670. In the following centuries, North Africa was almost completely Islamized.
What Continent is Africa in?
In ancient times, the term Africa was used to refer to the present-day Tunisia. The Rest of the continent was called Libya. The name Africa could come from a native tribe (Afarika), the Phoenician afar (dust), the Greek aphrike (uncontaminated) or the Latin aprica (sunny). The derivation of the native tribe is favoured. The other derivations are often labeled as untrustworthy.
After Asia, Africa is the second largest continent. The area is about 30 million km2, which is 22% of the total land area of the Earth. Africa’s population is about 675 million. This represents 13% of the world’s population.
Africa is almost entirely surrounded by oceans. The adjacent oceans are called Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. The only land link to other continents is the Sinai. It lies between North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
Africa has significantly fewer islands and Islands upstream than all other continents. The Sahara separates North Africa from black Africa.
