In the far west of Virginia, the small town of Abingdon, founded in 1778, is located in the immediate vicinity of Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. Here, in Woody, mountainous area, the State Theatre of Virginia is located. This was promoted by Eleanor ” Mam ” Eisenhower, the former First Lady who lived here for many years. At the beginning of August, the city awakens annually to unusual size when it houses the Virginia Highlands Festival. In the mountainous, wooded area there are many natural and settlement attractions. Big Stone Gap is a still largely undiscovered, ideal starting point to explore the far west of Virginia. A must be the somewhat remote Interstate Park in Breaks, which does not take care of highways, but covers the Grand Canyon of the East, a unique canyon system. Jonesville is one of the poorest places in Virginia.
