The city of Fremont, located in the southeast of San Francisco Bay, was formed by the merger of the formerly independent towns of Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose, Niles, and Warm Springs in 1956. The city of Newark, in which they had opposed the merger with the neighbors, is completely surrounded by Fremont.
Among the 214,000 inhabitants of Fremont is a considerable number of immigrants. Among other things, there are a large number of residents of Asian origin. Fremont is also home to the largest Afghan Community in the USA.
