Vanuatu is a sovereign republic of the Pacific Ocean, which geographically corresponds to The New Hebrides archipelago, plus two groups of nearby islands (Banks islands, Torres Islands).

Vanuatu stretches over more than 80 islands, 65 of which are inhabited, spread over 460 km. The main islands : Malakula (Malekula, 2500 km&), Tanna, Efate (Vaté), Espiritu Santo (5000 km2, very mountainous), Maewo (Aurora), Pentecost, Erromango (1113 km2), Aoba (the island of the Lepers), Ambrym, Épi. The total area is 12,200 km2, with a population of about 209,000 (2006).
