Flag of Mauritania

Mauritania is a Saharan state, almost entirely desert, in North-West Africa, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and bordering Western Sahara, Algeria, Mali and Senegal.

Area: 1 million km2; population: capital: Nouakchott (661,000 inhabitants, in 2012). Other cities : Nouadhîbou (72 000 inhabitants), Tidjikja (6000), Chinguetti(4700). Total Population : 3.2 million. The country, largely desert, presents a cultural contrast between the North, with its Arab-Berber population, often nomadic, and the South, populated by blacks (Toucouleurs and Peuls).
