Flag of Macedonia

Macedonia is a landlocked state in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula. Independent from Yugoslavia since 1991, the Republic of Macedonia is a parliamentary democracy.

It is divided administratively into 86 municipalities (opstini, singular: opstina). Its capital is Skopje (anc. Ueskub). Other cities : Kumanovo, Titov Veles, Prilep, Bitola (anc. Monastir), Tetovo.
An area of 25,333 km2 and population of 2?1 million inhabitants (2009), Macedonia is a country of mountains and basins.
