Flag of El Salvador

The small Republic of El Salvador is located in Central America on the Pacific side of Honduras, between Guatemala and Honduras.

With an area of 21,040 km2 and populated by 7,185 million inhabitants (2009), the country is divided administratively into 14 departments (Ahuachapan, Cabanas, Chalatenango, Cuscatlan, La Libertad, La Paz, La Union, Morazan, San Miguel, San Salvador, San Vicente, Santa Ana, Sonsonate, Usulutan).

The population, where the Indians and the Métis dominate, is denser than in the other states of Central America (about 50 per square kilometer); the cities are relatively numerous and located in the depressions separating the chains: San Salvador, the capital (2,200,000 inhabitants), Santa Ana, near the Guatemalan border and the site of Tazumal (274,000 inhabitants), San Miguel, Abuachanan, etc.the Union and La Libertad are the main ports.
